What is a Bad Beat in Poker?

For these examples we are using Zynga Poker screenshots to explain common poker terms.

A bad beat is when you believe you have a strong, potentially winning hand, only for another player to hold better cards. In this example, I had two Jacks (JJ) and coupled with the pair of queens this is  a strong hand (2 pair JJ & QQ). Another player had a pair of aces (AA) and won the hand.

Bad beats are fairly rare, but when they happen – they hurt!
